The Stanley Steamer
This was a video I directed on a Single-Camera Directing training course while at BBC Training & Development (BBC Academy). It was a short course on developing directing skills for creating TV content. The practical experience day involved going out on location with a camera operator and a sound recorder. I interviewed a classic cars enthusiast at his home, and he proudly presented his vintage vehicle, a 1924 Stanley Steamer. These were unusual steam-powered cars that were produced before the supremacy of petrol engines had been established. I filmed several cutaways showing closeups of the fascinating mechanics, which take on a surreal quality at close focus. I chose suitable music to fit the 1920s: Dance Little Lady by Noël Coward.
